CARROLLTON, TX (July 18, 2020) - Final round results of the 114th Southern Amateur Championship of the Southern Golf Association hosted by Maridoe Golf Club in Carrollton, TX on Saturday, July 18, 2020 (7445 yards, par-72, 77.4/152).
Championship Links:
SMU’s McClure Meissner set the tone of his victorious day, fighting hard, to claim the 114thSouthern Amateur Championship title after the first hole playoff. Making seven birdies (Nos. 1-2, 6, 8, 12-14) Meissner shot a successful six-under 66 and an overall 281 (-7).
“When I woke up, I was about six or seven shots back, so I didn’t expect to catch the leaders today,” Meissner told the Southern Golf Association. “I told myself to keep being aggressive, giving myself looks.”
Things took an interesting turn when Illinois State’s David Perkins buried a chip for eagle on hole No. 16, emerging to the top, tied for the lead alongside Meissner. Perkins bogeyed the first playoff hole and lipped out a 4-footer to stand second.
“Yesterday wasn’t my best, but I battled,” Perkins said. “Today, Hole 16 was a really cool moment for me, so far, in my career. That was one of my best shots.”
Both Meissner and Perkins are exempt into the 120th U.S. Amateur Championship, conducted by the USGA. The Championship will be held at Bandon Dunes Golf Resort on Aug. 10-16, 2020.
Standing third place, Oklahoma University’s Quade Cummins posted a two-under 70. Toward the end, his birdies on holes No. 12 and 18 boosted his name on the leaderboard. Overall, he posted five-under 283.
“I kind of got off to a shaky start in the final round,” Cummins said. “I am very happy with shooting three rounds under par, out at Maridoe. You have to be on top of your game to play well out here.”
