The Championship was first played in 1973 with Buddy Rountree from Ft. Lauderdale, Florida winning the inaugural event. Charles Howell III, of Augusta, Georgia holds the record with 3 victories (1994-1996). This year marks the 52nd playing of the Southern Junior Championship. In 2023, Tyler Watts of Huntsville, AL was crowned the 51st Southern Junior Champion.
2024 marks the 52nd playing of the Southern Junior Championship and the first time that Seminole Legacy Golf Club has hosted the Southern Junior Championship. Tyler Watts, of Huntsville, AL, won the 51st Southern Junior Championship title at Baton Rouge Country Club in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.

The forerunner to the Annual Junior Championship was first played as the Junior Division of the Southern Amateur Championship and was held in conjunction with the Championship played July 17-20, 1972 at the Green Island Country Club, Columbus, Georgia. Commencing in 1973, the Annual Junior Championship was established and conducted at a site separate from the Southern Amateur Championship. To view years of history, click Past Results.
