CARROLLTON, TX (July 17, 2020) - Third round results of the 114th Southern Amateur Championship of the Southern Golf Association hosted by Maridoe Golf Club in Carrollton, TX on Friday, July 17, 2020 (7445 yards, par-72, 77.4/152).
Climbing to the top of the leaderboard, Cole Hammer of Houston, TX played Maridoe’s firm fairways and fast greens to post a four-under 68, claiming the lead for round three.
“Luckily, I’ve been able to put it in the short grass the last couple of days for an opportunity to stay close to the hole,” Hammer said. “If you’re not in the fairways, it’s a grind for par. Fairways are key.”
Pierceson Coody of Plano, TX demonstrated his momentum early on, sinking a 60-footer eagle putt on hole No. 2.
“The eagle was a nice way to start the day for sure,” Coody said. “It kind of calmed things down.”
Heading into the final round of the 114th Southern Amateur Championship, long-time friends Hammer and Coody will play hard with victory in sight. Coody remains one-stroke behind Hammer.
Also in the final group is David Perkins of East Peoria, IL, shooting a 74 for the day.
The University of Alabama’s Wilson Furr shot the lowest round of the day with an eagle on hole No. 1 to open his exciting round. Furr’s ability to keep the ball in play resulted in a major leap, formerly standing T42 and currently sitting T7.
“The pin locations were tough,” Furr said. “If you take advantage of the times that you can, you can make birdies. I feel like I did a good job of that today.”
