Birmingham, AL (May 4, 2020) - Due to ongoing uncertainty surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic in the coming weeks, the Southern Golf Association announced changes to its qualifying and field selection process for the 114th Southern Amateur Championship scheduled for July 15-18, 2020 at Maridoe Golf Club in Carrollton, Texas.
All 20 sectional qualifying sites have been cancelled including the On-Site Qualifier on July 13 at Maridoe Golf Club. Qualifying entrants will be withdrawn and issued a full refund.
“The health and safety of our participants, host club personnel and directors is our number one priority,” stated Alexander G. Reynolds, President of the SGA. “Although we are seeing a phased re-opening of the country, this difficult decision was ultimately determined by the varying levels of approved activity throughout the SGA’s 15-state footprint making it nearly impossible to consistently conduct sectional qualifying for our flagship event. We intend to return to our normal qualifying process in 2021 allowing eligible golfers an opportunity to participate in this storied elite amateur championship.”
SGA will reduce the Southern Amateur Championship field size at Maridoe Golf Club from 156 to 144 competitors that will be comprised of Exempt and Invitation Only participants. Other players wishing to compete are encouraged to register for the “Exempt Player Wait List” for Committee review and to create an alternate list of participants.
