BIRMINGHAM, AL (July 29, 2017) – Braden Thornberry, a 20-year-old rising junior at Ole Miss, has been named Amateur of the Month for June by the Southern Golf Association (SGA).
Thornberry, a native of Olive Branch, MS, continued the hot play in June following his victory at the Division I Men's Golf Individual National Championship at Rich Harvest Farms in Sugar Grove, Illinois back in May.
He began the month with a tie for fourth finish at the PGA TOUR FedEx St. Jude Classic at TPC Southwind in Memphis, TN.
The following week, Thornberry won the Sunnehanna Amateur in Johnstown, PA in a three-hole aggregate playoff over defending champion Collin Morikawa of La Canada, CA.
Thornberry is currently the number one ranked amateur in the World according to Scratch Players World Amateur Ranking and number three by the World Amateur Golf Ranking.
Winners of the SGA’s monthly award are determined by a national panel of golf officials, coaches and journalists. Now in its 14th season, notable recipients have been Bill Haas, Michelle Wie, Hunter Mahan, Ryan Moore, J. B. Holmes, Webb Simpson, Rhys Davies, Kyle Stanley, Kevin Fortin-Simard, Rickie Fowler, Danny Lee, Matthew Fitzpatrick, Alice Hewson, and more recently Lee McCoy & Aaron Wise.
The SGA supports amateur golf at the highest level, including staging of the storied Southern Amateur, as well as the Southern Junior Championship.
