BIRMINGHAM, AL (February 19, 2020) – Pepperdine University redshirt senior Sahith Theegala has been named the SGA Amateur of the Month Presented by Global Golf Post for January 2020 by the Southern Golf Association (SGA).
Theegala, a native of Chino Hills, CA, claimed two victories to begin the new year. He won the Australian Master of the Amateurs played at Victoria Golf Club by four strokes over Jang Hyun Lee of Korea. Then he carded a 12-under 204 to win the Southwestern Invitational individual title by one stroke over Leon D’Souza of USC that also paced his Pepperdine Waves to a 17-stroke team victory over Arizona State and USC.
He is currently the 12th ranked Amateur in the World according to the Scratch Players World Amateur Rankings (SPWAR) and 7th in the World Amateur Golf Ranking (WAGR).
Winners of the SGA’s monthly award are determined by an international panel of golf officials, coaches and journalists. Now in its 14th season, notable recipients have been Bill Haas, Michelle Wie, Hunter Mahan, Ryan Moore, J. B. Holmes, Webb Simpson, Rhys Davies, Kyle Stanley, Kevin Fortin-Simard, Rickie Fowler, Danny Lee, Matthew Fitzpatrick, Alice Hewson, and more recently Viktor Hovland and Matthew Wolff.
The SGA supports amateur golf at the highest level, including staging of the storied Southern Amateur, as well as the Southern Junior Championship.
